Complicated Porn Discoveries Law Vote Embarrassment

How I Will Vote… by Stephen Fry (stephenfry.com): Fry does tell us how he intends to vote (well, sort of) by the end of this long and thoughtful article, but the entertaining digressions into why people vote, why people should vote, whether you should listen to celebrities like him about politics, etc, are more like the reasons for reading the article.

It’s Complicated: Making Sense Of Complexity by David Segal (New York Times): Segal makes a neat distinction between things that are complex, and things that are complicated and explains why not confusing the complex for the complicated matters. [cheers to Nomes]

Portrait Of The President As A Young Law Student by David Remnick (Brennan Center For Justice Blog): An excerpt from Remnick’s novel The Bridge, it’s a fascinating insight not only into some of Obama’s formative years but also into the rarefied world of the Harvard Law School, how and why it operates, and its influence on the levers of power in the US. The Death Of Embarrassment by Christine Rosen (In Character): Rosen argues that people have generally ceased to be embarrassed like we used to get embarrassed (all the TMI on facebook), and that this lack of embarrassment is going to cause a downfall in our civilisation. I’m not sure I agree, but it also has an interesting discussion of what embarrassment is, and why it might be useful. [via]

Where Do Porn Stars Come From? by Susannah Breslin (True/Slant): The majority of porn stars were physically or sexually abused. But a large minority seem to be relatively normal people who just like sex a lot. (I’m surprised Breslin doesn’t go into the extent of drug addiction as a reason why people might be in porn, though.)

A Short History Of Noah’s Ark Discoveries by Benjamin Radford (Discovery News): It’s funny, in a way, that religion is often said to be all about faith, in terms of making that leap to believe despite the lack of evidence; there are definitely religious people who spend a lot of time trying to find evidence that key components of their faith are definitely fact.
