Thames Amoebas Survey Broken Islamic Nakedness

The Psychology Of Nakedness by Jonah Lehrer (The Frontal Cortex): There’s a lot of controversy about ‘slutty’ clothing and slutwalks and whatnot, and one of the reasons for this is the idea that men objectify women who show a bit of cleavage, that they stop seeing women as people and see them as objects. But the research Lehrer discusses here suggests that men don’t straightforwardly objectify women, but that it’s more complex - instead, if someone shows bare flesh, we see them as having less ‘free will’, but having more capacity to experience.

The Broken Contract by George Packer (Foreign Affairs): In the last 35 years, the US has gone from a place where it’s taboo for CEOs to openly treat their employees like shit to a place where they are openly celebrated for doing so. Packer argues that this emboldening of the upper class is as much as fault for the way the US is as anything else - it’s certainly responsible for the way US politics is. The Islamic Scholar Who Gave Us Modern Philosophy by Robert Pasnau (Humanities): Averroes was a ~900AD Spanish philosopher who ended up being one of the most influential in Europe - he argued that the way to a deeper understanding of the world was the application of logic and philosophy to religion. As such, he was very influential on St Thomas Aquinas and the Renaissance in general. Except that his actual name was Ibn Rushd, and he was from the part of Spain which was conquered by the Islamic Empire, and he was sponsored by the local Caliph. And was basically ignored by the world of Islamic philosophy. [via]

Pro-Tip: Don’t Fall In The Thames by Sally Adee (Last Word On Nothing): Try not to go swimming in the Thames. I mean, it’s cleaner than it used to be, but you still have quite a chance of catching Weil’s Disease, which you contract via coming in contact with rat urine. Weil’s Disease is caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium and is capable of a) killing you and b) can enter your body straight through your skin. [via]

How Tiny Wasps Cope With Being Smaller Than Amoebas by Ed Yong (Not Exactly Rocket Science): The fairy wasp is so small that it lays its eggs inside the eggs of creatures which are a millimetre long. It’s so small that there are microbes that are larger. And part of what makes it so small is that it only has to live for 5 days, and so instead of having normal brain cells that manufacture their own proteins like every other cell ever, their brain cells are made smaller by removing everything but the basics.

Questionable Research Practices Are Rife In Psychology, Survey Suggests by Christian Jarrett (BPS Research Digest): It’s true. I’ve seen pretty much all of these dodgy practices - running more participants in the hope things will become significant, discounting other variables, trying a variety of different statistical methods to get the result you want, etc - except for outright fraud.
